Pro Day and individual workouts
Apr 26, 2007
Pro Day went well for me. The only negative that came out of the day was the weather. It was wet and nasty outside. I ran a 4.56 in the 40 and a 7.10 three-cone. I didn't run the short shuttle due to a groin injury. Overall it went well and I felt as though I helped myself.
After the pro day I had private workouts with two teams. I worked out for the Giants and the Bengals. The Falcons have been the most consistent team when it comes to calling me the most. I feel pretty good about my chances with the Falcons as well as the Bengals and Patriots. I don't have any special plans for draft day. I'm just going to sit back and watch it. I'm just playing it low-key a little bit. I'd like to be drafted on the first day, but as long as I make a team I'll be happy. After the season...

After the season I went down to Orlando to begin training. I was able to finish my class work online there. I train two times a day, six days a week with Sunday off. My day starts around 8 or 8:30 in the morning and ends around 7 or 7:30 in the evening, with a break in the middle. In the morning we do conditioning and speed work. work. Then we come backin the afternoon and work on agility most days. On days we get in the pool for awhile and then go into the training room for treatment, like getting your hamstrings or quads iced. Wednesday is a pool workout which is still kind of hard, but its our easiest day. It really helps get your legs back under you for the rest of the week.
In January I went down to Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl. I really enjoyed it. It gave me an opportunity to play against some of the best players in the country. It also gave me experience being around NFL coaches. I was able to interview with NFL teams and take care of some psychological testing. That came in handy because I was able to knock alot of it out before the combine. The interviews also helped because come combine time, the coaches would already know me by my face rather than having to look at a name tag. After the Senior Bowl, I headed back to Orlando to continue my training for the combine. Combine

We had long days at the combine. From going to the doctor's office to meeting with the teams, they were very long days. You go to the hospital where they jerk on your body. You have to do alot of psychological testing, then go meet with the teams at night. One morning we got up at 4:30 and I didn't go to bed until 11:00 the previous night. Then that night I didn't go to bed until 11 or 12 and I had to be up at 5:30 the next morning. When you do that over and over you lose alot of sleep. That made things difficult. Whenever I had a chance I'd have to make sure I got a little nap in or got something to eat because everything was scheduled and they weren't going to babysit you. If you aren't there, they'll just keep going without you. So I had to make sure I was on time for everything. But you really have to have alot of mental strength just to get through it.
I had a strained groin while I was down there so they were constantly checking that and checking my flexibility, strength, and range. The wonderlic test wasn't too bad. I had taken it my junior year and I did pretty well on it so I pretty much knew what to expect. You have a time limit so you have to work pretty fast. The questions are kind of tricky so if you try to skim through it and not really read the full questions, you're going to mess up. My strategy wasn't to get through the whole test in that amount of time. I wanted to make sure I read the whole question. So my strategy was if I only got through 35, make sure I got all 35 right. I thought that would be better than rushing through all 50 and making a bunch of mistakes. There's alot of strategy in that test because there are so many questions that you'll just never get asked. But combine is a stressful environment and alot of it is to see how well you handle yourself under pressure. I didn't do a full workout at the combine. I just did the bench press where I got 16 reps. The rest of the drills I'm going to do at my pro day on March 20th. |
