1 Oakland Raiders JaMarcus Russell* QB LSU
As is the case with most teams who pick first in the draft, the Raiders have a number of needs and could go in several different directions with the top pick in the draft. Calvin Johnson is and along with Randy Moss would give the Raiders a great pair of receivers. Joe Thomas could step in and immediately help an offensive line that gave up 72 sacks in 2006. However, it isn’t every year that a team has a chance to select a franchise quarterback. The 6-6 260 pound JaMarcus Russell has the strongest arm in the draft and seems to be more of an Al Davis pick than Brady Quinn.
2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Calvin Johnson* WR Georgia Tech
The Buccaneers send their 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks to the Lions to move up and get their man. Tampa is able to fill a big need and get the best player in the draft.
3 Cleveland Browns Brady Quinn QB Notre Dame
Charlie Frye's days as a starter are over. The Browns consider Adrian Peterson here, but with the signing of Jamal Lewis; they opt for the franchise quarterback who is from Ohio.
4 Detroit Lions Gaines Adams DE Clemson
The Lions are able to move back, acquire two additional first day draft picks, and still get the best defensive player in the draft. Gaines Adams will greatly improve the Detroit pass rush.
5 Arizona Cardinals Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin
Everything falls perfectly for the Cardinals. They are able to fill their biggest need and get the best player available at the same time. Joe Thomas will protect Matt Leinart's blindside for the next 10-15 years.
6 Washington Redskins LaRon Landry S LSU
This is a team that could really use some help on the defensive line; however, Landry is one of the few "can't miss" prospects in this draft. Landry and Shawn Taylor will make an awesome combination at the safety position for the Redskins.
7 Minnesota Vikings Adrian Peterson* RB Oklahoma
The Vikings go with the value pick here in the first round. Defensive end and receiver are bigger needs but Peterson is difficult to pass up at this point. They have Chester Taylor but most successful teams use a two-back system these days.
8 Atlanta Falcons Amobi Okoye DT Louisville
The Falcons have their first top pick in two years, having traded last year's first for defensive end John Abraham. Their previous two first round picks have been receivers, neither of which have paid dividends as of yet. This year the Falcons will turn their attention to the defensive side of the ball. They need to get younger at the defensive tackle position and they don't get much younger than the 19 year old Okoye.
9 Miami Dolphins Levi Brown OT Penn State
Left tackle has been a problem area for the Dolphins for years. They might try to trade up and grab Brady Quinn or move back and take Joe Staley, but at this point Levi Brown is their best bet.
10 Denver Broncos Patrick Willis MLB Ole Miss
After releasing Al Wilson, the Broncos are in need of a man in the middle on defense. Denver gives up their second round pick to move up and get their man.
11 San Francisco 49ers Leon Hall CB Michigan
San Francisco already upgraded their defensive backfield with the addition of Nate Clements in free agency; however, Walt Harris will be 33 years old this upcoming season. The addition of Leon Hall will give the 49ers a very good combination of cornerbacks for years to come.
12 Buffalo Bills Darrelle Revis* CB Pitt
The Bills have needs at running back and linebacker. They may consider Lynch at this point but Revis has been moving up boards while Lynch has been moving down boards. Revis will replace the departed Nate Clements.
13 St. Louis Rams Jon Beason* OLB Miami FL
The Rams have some options here. With the age of Leonard Little, Adam Carriker could be a possibility. They lost Kevin Curtis, but they signed Drew Bennett and traded for Daunte Hall. They don't have much at linebacker outside of Will Witherspoon. Beason has been moving up the boards and he makes alot of sense for the Rams here.
14 Carolina Panthers Reggie Nelson* S Florida
If they do trade Kris Jenkins, the Panthers could consider Alan Branch at this position. As it is now, Branch has been falling and the Panthers could use a young ball hawk at the safety position, both of which will be provided by Reggie Nelson.
15 Pittsburgh Steelers Jarvis Moss* DE Florida
The Florida juniors go back-to-back here in the middle of the first round. Jarvis Moss will step in and replace Joey Porter who went to Miami in free agency.
16 Green Bay Packers Marshawn Lynch* RB California
With Ahman Green down in Houston, the Packers are looking for a featured running back to carry the ball for them and take some of the pressure off of quarterback Brett Favre. The Packers do have a slew of needs on defense, and could opt to go with a more power-oriented back like Irons or Michael Bush in the second round. But right now, Lynch is their best pick here.
17 Jacksonville Jaguars Adam Carriker DE Nebraska
The Jaguars have needs in the secondary, but they also could use a defensive end. Adam Carriker is a guy who could play end or tackle and he's too good for the Jaguars to pass up on at this point.
18 Cincinnati Bengals Jamaal Anderson* DE Arkansas
The Bengals need help on the defensive side of the ball. Their defense took a big hit in free agency. They have some uncertainty at defensive end. Justin Smith is their franchise player and they may lose him next year if they can't come to an agreement. Jamaal Anderson is a good value at this point in the first round.
19 Tennessee Titans Ted Ginn* WR Ohio State
With the loss of receiver Drew Bennett in free agency, the Titans need a new target for quarterback Vince Young. The suspension of Pacman Jones also leaves the team looking for a return specialist. Ted Ginn can fill both of those roles for the Titans.
20 N. Y. Giants Joe Staley OT Central Michigan
With the retirement of Bob Whitfield and the release of Luke Petigout, offensive tackle becomes a big need for the Giants. Joe Staley is a player who has been moving up and he's a perfect fit for the G-men.
21 Dallas Cowboys Dwayne Bowe WR LSU
With the age of Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn, the Cowboys are in need of some youth at the receiver position. Jerry Jones has a history of drafting players from LSU and he gets a good one here in Dwayne Bowe.
22 Houston Texans Ryan Kalil C USC
The Texans picked up an additional second round selection by moving back. The move allows them to get better value while adding help to an extremely weak offensive line.
23 Kansas City Chiefs Justin Blalock G Texas
The Chiefs could use a receiver here but they opt for Justin Blalock who can play guard or right tackle, both positions of need after the release of Kyle Turley and the retirement of Will Shields.
24 New England Patriots Chris Houston* CB Arkansas
New England doesn't appear to be willing to give in to the contract demands of Asante Samuel. Good teams build through the draft and the best teams are able to draft their future replacements now. The Patriots do just that with the selection of Houston.
25 N. Y. Jets Greg Olsen* TE Miami FL
The Jets have bigger needs than tight end, but based on what is available, Olsen is their best bet here. The Jets haven't had a playmaker at the tight end position in quite some time. They get one here with the selection of Olsen.
26 Philadelphia Eagles Michael Griffin S Texas
The Eagles are looking for more help at linebacker, but they will have to find that later in the draft. They go with Michael Griffin here. They lost Michael Lewis to the 49ers in free agency leaving them with just Sean Considine opposite an aging Brian Dawkins.
27 New Orleans Saints Alan Branch* DT Michigan
The Saints are a team that likes to go best player available. The signing of cornerback Jason David gives them the ability to do just that. Hollis Thomas isn't getting any younger and Brian Young is one of their weak spots. Alan Branch fills the team's biggest need and gives them the best player available.
28 New England Patriots Paul Posluszny OLB Penn State
The Patriots are in need of a young linebacker on the inside. They are able to do just that and get good value at the same time with the selection of Posluszny late in the first round.
29 Baltimore Ravens Anthony Spencer DE Purdue
The Ravens lost Adalius Thomas to the Patriots in free agency and are in need of a replacement. They are thrilled that Anthony Spencer is still on the board at this point in round one.
30 San Diego Chargers Dwayne Jarrett* WR USC
When your leading receivers are a tight end and running back, many of your passes probably aren't going past 10 yards in the air. A good young receiver may be the last piece to the offensive puzzle for the Chargers. Due to the depth at receiver in this draft, they are able to add a very good one late in the first round. Jarrett will give Phillip Rivers and additional target to throw to and he should open up more lanes for LT and Gates as well.
31 Chicago Bears Ben Grubbs G Auburn
Reuben Brown is getting up in age and the Bears could use help at the other guard position as well. The Bears need to stay strong up front if they want to return to the Super Bowl and the addition of Grubbs will help them in that area.
32 Indianapolis Colts Aaron Ross CB Texas
The Colts' defense took a major hit in free agency this year. That leaves them with alot of options here at the end of the first round. Aaron Ross makes sense for a Colts team that lost both of their starting corners in free agency.
