It's that time again. This year's opening practice was much different than last year. Last year I got a sunburn on the first day. This year I was soaking wet by the end of practice. The field was wet due to the early morning rain, but the rain held off for the first hour of practice. It started raining hard about the last 30 minutes. There were alot of offensive miscues (poor passes, dropped passes, fumbled snaps), but players need to be able to perform well in all weather conditions. Here are a few notes from the North team practice on those who did perform well and those who did not. QB Troy Smith - Had good zip and accuracy on short to intermediate passes, but had a couple balls sail on him. He put a couple nice deep balls right over the shoulder of the receiver resulting in long gains. QB Drew Stanton - Overall was pretty accurate. He did have trouble throwing balls too low or behind receivers at times. His deep passes were on the the money when he attempted them. QB Tyler Palko - Didn't get much zip on out routes--Those passes will get knocked down or intercepted at the next level. He under threw the deep routes--Arm strength seems to be a problem. He fumbled two snaps. He did a good job of recovering the football and turning a busted play that would've been a 5 yard loss into a 5 yard gain. RB Garrett Wolfe - Overall was a good receiver but did have a "body catch". He made a nice over the shoulder grab 30 yards down the field. He seems to be a hard worker--If he gets tackled for a loss, he gets up and runs it all the way to the endzone anyway. RB Tony Hunt - Ran extremely hard, fighting for additional yardage. He did cause a busted play by blocking instead of taking a handoff. His hands seem to be an issue as he dropped several screen passes. WR Aundrae Allison - Had a couple drops and body catches. WR Jason Hill - Displayed excellent hands, catching practically everything that came his way. He catches the ball with his hands, rather than the "body catch" and he goes up and gets it at its highest point. He did a good job of adjusting to poorly thrown balls. WR David Clowney - Has a real hard time using his hands to catch the ball. When he does catch it, he traps it against his body. When he did attempt to use his hands, he usually dropped the ball. He did make one nice catch on a high pass from Troy Smith. TE Scott Chandler - Caught everything that came his way. Did a good job of going up and getting the ball at its highest point. TE Clark Harris - Caught everything that came his way. OT James Marten and DE LaMarr Woodley went at it all practice...Very intense battle. Every time they went against each other they almost got into a fight at the end of the play. OT Levi Brown was beat on one play by Anthony Spencer, but other than that he was a mauler in the running game and a brick wall in the passing game during the scrimmage. He had an excellent day. DT Brandon Mebane did a good job against Samson Sateele in 1-1 drills, winning the leverage battle and beating him with the bull rush. DE Adam Carriker is big, strong, and overpowering. He consistently beat both Doug Datish and Ryan Harris in 1-1 drills. DE Anthony Spencer displayed good quickness as a pass rusher, beating Levi Brown off the edge in the scrimmage. LB Paul Posluszny had a good day as a run defender. He did a good job of shedding blockers and making plays in the backfield. S Eric Weddle - Did a good job of stepping up to support the run--Hard hitter and a solid tackler. Team Interest: There wasn't much activitiy after practice due to the rain, but here is the list of players that teams seemed to show interest in after the practice session. Dolphins - Drew Stanton, Troy Smith, Tyler Palko, Leon Hall Texans - Paul Posluszny Browns - Manny Ramirez Jets - Samson Satele |
