Chris Long
Jake to Dolphins, Chris to Rams
Apr 27, 2008, 2:47 AM

NEW YORK (AP) - Forget the intrigue at the top of the draft. The NFL invited a half-dozen players to the draft Saturday, and they went in the first six picks.

Then things went a bit crazy.

From Michigan tackle Jake Long, who already had signed with the Miami Dolphins, to defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston going sixth to the New York Jets, there was an air of predictability to the proceedings. Unlike last year, when Notre Dame's Brady Quinn had to wait hours to be chosen, the players on-hand hit the Radio City Music Hall stage quickly.

"It's great to see the green room empty," said Virginia defensive end Chris Long, who went second to St. Louis

Chiefs trade Allen to Vikings
Apr 23, 2008, 9:06 AM

Ever since negotiations for a long-term contract broke off last year, Jared Allen’s departure from the Chiefs carried a sense of inevitability.

It happened Tuesday night when the Chiefs agreed to trade their Pro Bowl defensive end to the Minnesota Vikings, a source said.

The Chiefs are expected to receive Minnesota’s first-round pick (No. 17) and both the Vikings’ third-round picks (73rd and 82nd). It would give the Chiefs six picks in the first 82 players in this weekend’s draft and 13 total picks. The Chiefs also have one choice in the fourth and two each in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds.

Jake Long
Dolphins secure top pick J. Long with $57M deal
Apr 22, 2008, 5:56 PM

Sitting to the left of the newest member of the Miami Dolphins, general manager Jeff Ireland made it clear Tuesday that left tackle Jake Long has been the team's top choice to become the first overall pick of this year's NFL Draft all along.

And now, they've finally got him.

Long signed a five-year deal worth $57.75 million that includes $30 million in guaranteed money, The Miami Herald learned.

''Jake was our guy from the beginning,'' Ireland said. ``I don't make it a habit of telling you what is on our board, but Jake Long was on the top of our board for a long time. There wasn't a whole lot of debate. We thought it was a good fit for the Miami Dolphins.

Matt Ryan
Worst QB crop in years?
Apr 15, 2008, 10:04 AM

There have been better years for quarterbacks in the NFL draft, that’s for sure. In fact, one veteran NFL offensive coordinator said this is the worst crop of college quarterbacks he’s seen in years.

Matt Ryan of Boston College is the only sure first-rounder. But adding color to an otherwise drab year at the position is the emergence of small-college prospects Josh Johnson and Joe Flacco.

NFL teams weigh Wonderlic tests
Mar 22, 2008, 9:16 PM

One of the many variables NFL teams are factoring into their draft grades are scores from the Wonderlic tests given at the scouting combine. Wonderlic tests are given to help gauge the intelligence of prospects.

NFL teams expect most prospects will score well because players can prepare for the tests. When a player has an unusually low score, it sets off alarms.

A person of average intelligence is supposed to score a 20. NFL teams like to see quarterbacks, offensive linemen, middle linebackers and safeties score higher than that because those positions can be mentally demanding.
