Adrian McPherson was once one of the most promising young quarterbacks in college football. Three months into his sophomore season, McPherson was arrested and kicked off of the Florida State team for stealing a blank check. A few months later he was charged for gambling on college and professional games. He attempted to transfer but was not allowed to play college football again. McPherson went on to play for the Indiana Firebirds in the Arena Football League in 2004. He threw 61 touchdown passes and just five interceptions in his lone season with the Firebirds. He has made himself eligible for the 2005 NFL draft and has become one of the draft’s most intriguing prospects. He has a good combination of size and speed for a quarterback. He has the ability to get out of the pocket and throw on the run or make a play with his feet if necessary. He has a cannon for an arm and the ability to make all the throws at the professional level. He was extremely impressive in his recent workouts, improving on his 4.69 combine 40 by running in the mid 4.5’s and putting his arm strength on display by launching the ball 72 yards in the air flat-footed. While it is easy to look at a guy like Adrian McPherson and get excited, it is important to keep in mind this is a guy who has had character issues in the past and he only has a handful of college starts and one season of arena football under his belt. In the NFL McPherson is not going to be able to get by on athletic ability alone. He has a lot to learn and he will take a couple of years to develop, but he has all the tools to be a very good starting quarterback in time if he can put it all together. He could go as high as the third round, but I think the fourth round would be more likely.
