Background

Alan Zemaitis comes from a large family where he has five younger brothers. He played offense, defense, and special teams at Spencerport Central High School in Rochester, New York. On defense, Alan had 132 career tackles and 3 interceptions. As a running back on offense, Alan rushed for 1,534 yards in his career with 18 touchdowns. He averaged just less than 7.5 yards per carry in high school. He also returned kicks, averaging 34 yards per return with 4 touchdowns in 10 attempts. As a senior, Zemaitis served as team captain. He was named team MVP at the conclusion of his final season. He received all-county and all-state honors for his performance and was the defensive team captain for the New York team in the Governor’s Bowl (New York vs. New Jersey). Alan also was recognized for his academic achievement when he received the Black Scholar Athlete award. Alan accepted a scholarship to Penn State University, making him the first player in the history of his high school to play division I football. He sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt before spending the 2002 season as a special teams player and reserve cornerback. Alan suffered a setback in January 2003. He fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of his car which flipped over on an icy highway. He was airlifted to the hospital after the accident. His injuries included a broken nosebone and a concussion. He made a full recovery and was ready for the 2003 season but he was forced to wear a special helmet after the accident. Alan came through with a huge season that year, totaling 71 tackles, 4 interceptions and a big ten leading 18 pass breakups. His 207 yards on interception returns was a school and conference single-season record. Zemaitis was named second team all-big ten for his performance as a sophomore. As a junior, opposing offenses tended to avoid throwing in Zemaitis’ direction. His stats were down a bit but he still had a good season with 47 tackles, 2 interceptions and 6 passes broken up. Alan entered the 2005 season as one of the top defenders and a leader in the Penn State defensive backfield.

Analysis

Alan Zemaitis has a good deal of experience against top competition, having started at cornerback the past three seasons in the big ten. He has a good combination of size and speed for a corner. He is an intelligent player who is very good at reading and reacting to what the offense is doing. He has a fluid backpedal and good hip movement. He defends a lot of passes and can be elusive after the interception. He is a solid all-around corner who can defend the run as well as the pass. He will step up and support the run and is an excellent open field tackler. Alan is an extremely hard worker who has no character issues. He has good size and uses his body well but you would expect him a little more physical than he is. He has good speed but lacks elite speed. He could be a candidate to switch to free safety in the NFL. Alan Zemaitis has a lot of physical tools and all the intangibles you could want in a player.
