Analysis

Alex D. Smith is coming out of Utah a year early and it seems like the decision should’ve been a no-brainer. Coming off of an undefeated season in which he threw 28 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions, Smith’s stock isn’t likely to get much higher than it is right now. Add on to that the fact that he earned his bachelor’s degree as a sophomore and he’s currently working on his master’s degree, not to mention the fact that he projects as a first round pick this year, and it makes for a fairly easy decision on his part. He’s a two-year starter without a great deal of experience but his play couldn’t have been much better over the past two seasons. He has good height but could add some weight to help him take the everyday pounding of an NFL quarterback. He has pretty good arm strength and is extremely accurate on short to medium range passes. He could use some work on his deep ball though. He has the speed and mobility to avoid the blitz and even run for a first down when needed. He makes good decisions and rarely throws interceptions. I thought he had a nice touchdown to interception ratio of 5 to 1 as a sophomore, only to see him take it to 7 to 1 as a junior. He put up some big numbers in Utah but that’s partially because he played in the spread offense. After spending most of his career in the shotgun, he will need to adapt to playing under center. He has the leadership ability and winning attitude that would be a welcome addition to any NFL team. Alex has really been moving up the boards recently and could be the first quarterback taken on draft day.
