Analysis

Andrew Walter received his undergraduate degree last year and considered entering the 2004 NFL draft before deciding to return to Arizona State for his senior season. He started two games in 2001 and has been a fulltime starter since his sophomore year, recording 35 career starts in his four years with the Sun Devils. Walter has prototypical size for an NFL quarterback and is a classic drop back passer. He has a strong arm and can make all the throws required of a professional signal caller. He stands tall in the pocket and delivers the football even with the pas rush in his face. He has a nice release and gets good velocity on his throws. Walter suffers from inconsistency at times and doesn’t always use proper mechanics. On occasion he will make poor decisions and force the ball into coverage. Mobility is one area where Walter his lacking. He takes a lot of sacks and doesn’t make very many plays with his feet. He displays great leadership ability and has been elected team captain by his teammates in each of the past three seasons. He puts more than his fair share of time in studying film and he is very skilled at reading defenses. He has thrown for 82 touchdown passes in his career, breaking the Pac-10 record of 77 previously held by John Elway. He holds almost every Arizona State passing record, including touchdowns in a season and career passing yardage. His health may be a problem for Walter. He is currently rehabbing from a separated shoulder he suffered towards the end of the season. He may not be able to workout for scouts prior to the draft, which may have an adverse effect on his draft position. Andrew Walter has the tools to become a very good starting quarterback in the NFL. He is a solid first day pick and could go as high as the second round.
