Background

Anthony Fasano attended Verona High School in Verona, New Jersey where he played basketball, football, baseball, and was a member of the track team. He was a forward on the basketball team and a two-time all-league player in baseball. He was the captain of the track team as a senior where he was a three-time all-conference performer and won the New Jersey state title for the Javelin throw as a senior. Anthony played both tight end and defensive end on the football team where he served as team captain in each of his final two seasons. As a junior he helped Verona to a 9-1 record, catching 42 passes for 744 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also had 69 tackles on defense. As a senior he led the team to a state championship with a school record 78 receptions for 1,460 yards and a school and county record 23 touchdowns. He also set the school record for solo tackles with 119 stops on they year. He was named first team all-state for his performance as a senior. He finished his career with 168 receptions for over 2,500 yards and a county record 42 touchdowns. He was selected to play in the Governor’s Bowl (New York vs. New Jersey) and the U.S. Army All-America Bowl. He accepted a scholarship to play for Notre Dame where he didn’t see any game action as a true freshman. As a sophomore, Fasano primarily played special teams but he did start three games at tight end, finishing with 18 receptions for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns. He started 9 games in 2004, totaling 27 receptions for 367 yards and 4 touchdowns. As a senior he racked up 562 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. His 45 receptions was the second highest total by a tight end in Notre Dame history. His 90 career receptions are also the second highest total by a tight end in school history.

Analysis

Anthony Fasano is one of the better all-around prospects at the tight end position. He has average size for a tight end with the frame to get bigger. He runs good routes and possesses soft hands. He lacks great speed and athletic ability but he has good quickness. He lacks great deep speed and isn’t very elusive after the catch; however he is an excellent short to intermediate range target. He wasn’t a great blocker his first couple years at Notre Dame but he has worked to improve in that area and is now a solid blocker. He has top notch intangibles including good leadership ability and an excellent work ethic. Anthony Fasno isn’t one of the big play tight ends that get selected in the first round of the draft; however he is a good all-around player who will make the big catch on third down and keep the chains moving. That along with his blocking ability makes him one of the better all-around tight end prospects in the 2006 NFL draft. He should be a first day pick in April.
