Background

Anthony Mix attended Baldwin High School in Bay Minette, Alabama where he played football and basketball. He was a three-year starter on the football team, totaling 27 receptions for 650 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior. He also had a kickoff return for a touchdown that season. As a senior he played quarterback, receiver, and defensive end. He had 448 receiving yards and 178 passing yards on offense. He returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and totaled 31 tackles and 5 sacks from his defensive end position. He was considered to be one of the top 10 receiver prospects in the nation and he accepted a scholarship to play at Auburn University where he became an immediate contributor as a true freshman, catching 13 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown. Anthony moved from receiver to tight end as a sophomore and totaled 21 receptions for 235 yards and a touchdown in a reserve role. Mix received four starts as a junior, catching 19 passes and setting career highs in yards (294) and touchdown receptions (3). As a senior, Anthony finished his career with 23 receptions for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Analysis

Anthony Mix is a versatile player with a great combination of size and speed. He has experience at both receiver and tight end and could project at either position in the NFL. He is a huge target who has the strength to break tackles and gain additional yardage after the catch. He needs to work on being a more consistent receiver as he has had a tendency to drop catchable balls in the past. His speed is good enough to create mismatches when he lines up at tight end, but it’s just about average for a receiver. If he is drafted to play tight end he will need to bulk up and increase his strength. He will also need to improve his blocking, otherwise he will be just a one-dimensional pass catching tight end at the professional level. Anthony Mix is a bit of a project. He hasn’t been known to have a great work ethic, but if he works hard, he could develop into a good tight end in a few years. He has a great deal of upside and should be selected late in the 2006 NFL draft.
