Analysis
Anthony Spencer has a good deal of experience against top competition, having started the past three seasons at defensive end for Purdue in the Big 10. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who hasn’t missed a game due to injury since earning a starting position at the beginning of his sophomore season. He is a hard worker with a non-stop motor. He has a quick first step which allows him to beat most offensive tackles off the snap. He is a great edge pass rusher with good closing speed getting to the quarterback. He does a good job of getting leverage on his opponents and he is able to gain penetration. He has a nose for the football and he makes a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage. He has good athleticism and has shown the ability to drop back into coverage. Spencer lacks ideal size and strength for a defensive end. As a result, he isn’t very strong at the point of attack. He would benefit from bulking up and increasing his strength; however, he lacks the frame to get much bigger. Anthony Spencer is a versatile player who could project as a defensive end in a 4-3 or an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. He has the potential to move up draft boards with a strong performance at the combine. As of now he projects as a first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft. Player News Feed
