Analysis

Antonio Perkins took a redshirt in 2000 and spent the majority of 2001 as a reserve corner before taking over as a starting corner midway through the 2002 season. He has average size and great speed. He set an Oklahoma record with his 4.31 40 time. He has the ability to play in both man-to-man and zone coverages. He has good change of direction ability and closes on the ball well. He has an excellent vertical leap and above average ball skills. When he does get the ball, he has the ability to score from anywhere on the field. He can turn and run with any receiver that lines up against him. He will step up and support the run, but his tackling technique is questionable. He missed two games with a sprained knee as a senior, but other than that he has been a pretty durable player. His draft stock is boosted due to his ability as a punt returner. He tied the NCAA record for touchdowns off of punt returns his junior season with four and has eight touchdown returns in his career. His career average is 12.8 yards per punt return, but he had an off year as a senior with just 9.7 yards per return and one touchdown. Perkins isn't a guy who is going to be a "shutdown" corner in the NFL, but he does have the potenial to become a solid corner as well as an excellent return man. If he didn't play special teams he would most likely be an early day two prospect, but his return skills should push him up into the latter portion of day one.
