Analysis

Antrel Rolle has a good deal of experience playing cornerback against top competition. He began his career at Miami as a nickelback, before moving into a starting role as a sophomore and staying there for three seasons with the Hurricanes. Antrel probably could've been a first round pick in the 2004 NFL draft, but he opted to stay in school for his senior season. He really caught everyone's attention as a junior when he held arguably the best receiver in college football, Larry Fitzgerald to 3 catches for 26 yards and a touchdown. He is a tall corner, with good strength and atleticism. He has great change of direction ability and is very physical at the line of scrimmage. He loves jamming receivers at the line and rarely allows one to get a clean release. He can cover a receiver in the slot and has the speed to stay with an outside receiver on the deep ball. He doesn't get very many interceptions (5 in his career). This is partially because most quarterbacks won't throw his way very often, but also because he isn't the greatest when it comes to going after the football in the air. He is a solid tackler who had some problems wrapping up as a junior. He has improved his technique as a senior but this is still one area he could improve on. He is good on the blitz and has the closing speed to get to the quarterback in the backfield. He returned some punts as a sophomore and junior, averaging 15.6 yards per return, including a 66 yard return for a touchdown. Rolle was arrested and suspended prior to his senior season, but charges were never filed. When it comes to playing cornerback, Antrel Rolle is a true perfectionist. If he gives up one catch in a game he is disappointed with his play. He is a true "shutdown corner". He has the ability to effectively take the opposing teams top receiver out of the game and should be an impact player as a rookie in the NFL. Rolle is one of the best cornerbacks in the 2005 NFL draft and will be a high first round pick.
