Background

Ben Grubbs attended Elmore County High School in Eclectic, Alabama where he played football and basketball. He was a four-year starter on the football team, playing offensive line, fullback, and linebacker. As a junior he totaled 110 tackles, 4 sacks, and an interception. As a senior he recorded 150 tackles, 6 sacks and an interception on defense. He carried the ball 28 times for 150 yards on offense. He was an all-county and all-metro linebacker and an all-state offensive lineman. He accepted a scholarship to Auburn University as a 250 pound defensive lineman where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. The following year, Grubbs was moved from defensive tackle to tight end, where he was utilized primarily as a blocker on running downs. As a sophomore, Grubbs was moved from tight end to guard during spring practices. He earned a starting position there and went on to start all 13 games as a sophomore. He was named "most improved offensive lineman" by the coaching staff. Grubbs had a great year as a junior, starting all 12 games at guard on the season. He was limited in spring practices prior to his senior season due to an ankle injury.

Analysis

Ben Grubbs has a great deal of experience against top competition, having started at guard for Auburn over the past three seasons. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who hasn't missed a game due to injury. He is an intelligent player and a hard worker. Grubbs is a converted tight end with great athleticism for an offensive lineman. He has quick feet and is a very good pass protector. His athleticism allows him to effectively pull and hit a moving target. He can get to the second level in the running game and take out a linebacker. He has put on about 70 pounds of bulk since coming to Aubrn as a true freshman. He has room to get bigger and stronger. He needs to do a better job of finishing his blocks. He has only been playing guard for three years and he has improved every season. Ben Grubbs is still a bit raw, but he has a great deal of upside and could develop into a great offensive guard at the next level. He would be a great fit on a team that utilizes a zone blocking scheme and he could be selected anywhere from the late first round to the early second round on draft day.

Billick, not the personnel, is the team's glaring problem It's the time of the season that most NFL coaches would prefer to avoid. Being two games under .500 and facing a strong remaining schedule, the Ravens have to decide whether to play for the present, or look to the future.
