Ben Grubbs attended Elmore County High School in Eclectic, Alabama where he played football and basketball. He was a four-year starter on the football team, playing offensive line, fullback, and linebacker. As a junior he totaled 110 tackles, 4 sacks, and an interception. As a senior he recorded 150 tackles, 6 sacks and an interception on defense. He carried the ball 28 times for 150 yards on offense. He was an all-county and all-metro linebacker and an all-state offensive lineman. He accepted a scholarship to Auburn University as a 250 pound defensive lineman where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. The following year, Grubbs was moved from defensive tackle to tight end, where he was utilized primarily as a blocker on running downs. As a sophomore, Grubbs was moved from tight end to guard during spring practices. He earned a starting position there and went on to start all 13 games as a sophomore. He was named "most improved offensive lineman" by the coaching staff. Grubbs had a great year as a junior, starting all 12 games at guard on the season. He was limited in spring practices prior to his senior season due to an ankle injury.
Analysis
Ben Grubbs has a great deal of experience against top competition, having started at guard for Auburn over the past three seasons. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who hasn't missed a game due to injury. He is an intelligent player and a hard worker. Grubbs is a converted tight end with great athleticism for an offensive lineman. He has quick feet and is a very good pass protector. His athleticism allows him to effectively pull and hit a moving target. He can get to the second level in the running game and take out a linebacker. He has put on about 70 pounds of bulk since coming to Aubrn as a true freshman. He has room to get bigger and stronger. He needs to do a better job of finishing his blocks. He has only been playing guard for three years and he has improved every season. Ben Grubbs is still a bit raw, but he has a great deal of upside and could develop into a great offensive guard at the next level. He would be a great fit on a team that utilizes a zone blocking scheme and he could be selected anywhere from the late first round to the early second round on draft day. Player News Feed
