Background

Brady Quinn is one of three children. His sister is the girlfriend of former Ohio State and current Green Bay Packer linebacker A.J. Hawk. He has two uncles who played football in college (David Slates at Brown, Steve Slates at Kentucky). Brady attended Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio where he played football and baseball. He played baseball for three years, earning all-conference honors as a junior. He played quarterback on the football team, serving as team captain and passing for 2,200 yards and 21 touchdowns as a junior. He led Coffman to a 9-4 record that season. Brady earned all-conference honors for his play that season. As a senior he completed 142 of 258 passes for 2,149 yards and 25 touchdowns with just 4 interceptions. He led Coffman to an 8-3 record, earning all-conference and all-state honors in the process. He was named conference offensive player of the year and was selected to play in the Ohio North/South all-star game, as well as the U.S. Army All-American game in San Antonio, Texas. He was considered to be one of the top overall prospects in the nation and accepted a scholarship to Notre Dame. As a true freshman in 2003, Brady started out as a backup before moving into the starting lineup during the fourth game of the season. He completed 157 of 332 passes for 1,831 yards with 9 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He set school freshman records for attempts, completions, and yards. His 9 touchdown passes were good for second best by a freshman in school history. As a sophomore he started all twelve games, completing 191 of 353 passes for 2,586 yards and 17 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Statistically Quinn had the best season of any sophomore quarterback in school history. His 2,586 passing yards rank second on the school’s all-time single season list. As a junior he completed 263 of 405 attempts for 3,633 yards and 32 touchdowns with just 7 interceptions. He moved into first place in school history for career attempts, completions, yards, yards per game, and touchdown passes. His junior numbers were good for first place for single season attempts, completions, yards, yards per game, and touchdown passes. He had a chance to be a high first round draft pick in the 2006 NFL draft, but he opted to return to Notre Dame for his senior season instead.

Analysis

Brady Quinn has a great deal of experience, having started at quarterback for Notre Dame since his true freshman season. He is a pocket passer with prototypical size for an NFL quarterback. He is a hard worker who possesses excellent leadership ability. He is patient and calm in the pocket and makes good decisions. He sees the whole field and does a good job of going through his progressions. He is a tough player who prides himself on his ability to take a hit and he will stand in the pocket and deliver the football with a defender in his face. He has a strong arm with the ability to make every throw required of an NFL quarterback. He throws a nice, tight spiral and does a good job of leading his receivers, allowing them to gain additional yards after the catch. He isn’t an outstanding athlete, but he has the ability to evade the rush and make an accurate throw on the run. He is a pocket passer who isn't likely to make many plays with his feet. He is extremely accurate with his short to intermediate range passes. He was a bit inconsistent and didn’t throw a very accurate deep ball early on in his career. He has shown significant improvement in both of those areas over the past two seasons. After a vast improvement since Charlie Weis took over as head coach, Brady will have to prove to scouts that he is not just a product of the system. He currently ranks as the top senior quarterback available and could be the first or second overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
