Background

Brandon Guillory attended Abramson High School in New Orleans, Louisiana where he played football, basketball, and ran track. He helped the track team to a state championship and the basketball team to a #1 ranking as a senior. Brandon went on to Louisiana-Monroe where he made the team as a walk-on wide receiver. He served primarily as a special teams player as a true freshman. He finished his first season with 9 tackles and 2 sacks on the year. He converted to defensive end, earning a starting position as a sophomore. He totaled 32 tackles, 2 sacks, and a career high 6 forced fumbles on the season. As a junior he finished with a career high 47 tackles on the season. He also had 6 sacks on his way to first team all-sun belt honors. As a senior he totaled 40 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and a career high 9 ½ sacks, earning first team all-sun belt conference honors for the second consecutive season.

Analysis

Brandon Guillory has a great deal of experience, having started the past three seasons for the Indians. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who rarely misses time due to injury. He has good instincts and is a gifted athlete with excellent speed and change of direction ability. He is an excellent pass rusher with great closing speed getting to the quarterback. His speed allows him to chase running backs down from behind and he is a fundamentally sound tackler. Brandon Guillory lacks ideal size and strength to play defensive end in the NFL. He isn’t very strong at the point of attack and he has trouble shedding blocks of larger offensive linemen. His ability to contribute and block kicks on special teams should help his draft day value. Guillory is an undersized defensive end who would probably fit in better as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. He has a chance to be selected late on the second day of the 2006 NFL draft.
