Background

Brian Iwuh attended Worthing High School in Houston, Texas where he played football and was MVP of the track team as a senior. As a sophomore he was named honorable mention all-league and all-district as he helped Worthing to a 7-3 record. As a junior he totaled 110 tackles, 5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles from his defensive end position, on his way to honorable mention all-league and all-district for the second consecutive season. Worthing had a rough year with a 5-5 record that season. As a senior, Iwuh converted to strong safety and was named team captain. He totaled 91 tackles, 2 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 5 pass break-ups, and 3 interceptions as he helped Worthing to a 9-3 record. He was named first team all-league and second team all-district for his performance as a senior. He was selected to play in Houston’s North-South all-star game and he was considered to be one of the top safety prospects in the nation. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Colorado where he started two games at free safety as a true freshman, totaling 21 tackles and 1 pass break-up on the season. He moved to strong safety as a sophomore where he started four games. He finished the season with 32 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 1 pass break-up. He converted to linebacker as a junior and had a breakout season, totaling 98 tackles, 1 ½ sacks, 2 pass break-ups, and 1 interception. He was named second team all-big twelve for his play as a junior. Iwuh had another good year as a senior, finishing with 65 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles, earning all-conference honors for the second consecutive season.

Analysis

Brian Iwuh is a versatile player with a good deal of experience having started at both safety and outside linebacker during his time at Colorado. He has good instincts and does a great job of reading and reacting to what the offense is doing. He has the speed to make plays sideline to sideline, as well as cover tight ends and running backs coming out of the backfield. He is a very hard hitter and a solid tackler. He is a very good coverage linebacker with fluid hips, quick feet, and soft hands. He lacks ideal size and strength for a linebacker and will struggle to get off blocks. Brian Iwuh could project asa an outside linebacker or strong safety in the NFL; however he doesn’t have the speed you look for in a safety or the size you’d like to see in a linebacker. He could be converted back to safety but he would probably be better off staying at linebacker. He should be an excellent special teams player initially and could develop into a solid outside linebacker in the future. He should be a second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
