Brodie Croyle’s father John Croyle was an All-American defensive end for Paul “Bear” Bryant at the University of Alabama. His sister Reagan also attended Alabama where she was a member of the women’s basketball team and Alabama’s 2000 homecoming queen. Brodie played at Westbrook Christian High School where he passed for 2,838 yards and 38 touchdowns with just 7 interceptions as a junior. Despite missing his senior season with a torn ACL, Croyle set the Alabama high school career marks for passing yards (9,323) and touchdowns (105). He also holds records for single game passing yards (528), touchdowns (7), as well as single season passing yards (3,787) and touchdowns (44). Coming out of high school, Croyle was considered by many to be the top prospect in the nation. He followed in his father’s footsteps by signing with the University of Alabama and graduated high school early so he could enroll in January and participate in spring practice. He was voted most improved freshman by the coaching staff before sitting out the 2001 season as a redshirt. In 2002 Croyle saw action in eight games, starting two and became the first freshman quarterback in over 20 years to throw for at least 1,000 yards for the University of Alabama. As a sophomore Croyle earned the starting quarterback job and set single-season records for pass attempts (341) and touchdowns (16). He is totals for completions (182) and passing yards (2,303) were good for second all-time in school history. He played through rib and shoulder injuries most of the year but did miss two games. He had surgery to repair a partially dislocated left shoulder on December 11th. Brodie got off to a great start as a junior, completing 67% of his passes while throwing 6 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, leading the Tide to a 3-0 record. In the third quarter of the Western Carolina game, Croyle tore his right ACL, effectively ending his junior season. He had successful surgery September 20th and began his rehab to prepare for his senior season. As a senior Croyle finally had a healthy season, leading the Crimson Tide to a 9-2 regular season record. In addition to his exploits on the field, Croyle has been very active in the community and is a two-time winner of the Derrick Thomas award for community service.
Analysis
Brodie Croyle is a tall, slender quarterback who possesses the arm strength to make all the throws required of an NFL signal caller. He has a quick release, very good accuracy and does a good job of hitting his receivers in stride, allowing them to get yards after the catch. He is able to see the whole field and is very good at reading opposing defenses. He has enough mobility to avoid the pass rush and get out of the pocket when needed, however he has a tendency to stay in the pocket too long at times. Brodie forced too many passes into coverage his first two years at Alabama; However he worked on that his final two years, improving his touchdown to interception ratio from nearly 1-1 as a freshman and sophomore to just under 4-1 as a junior and senior. He is an excellent leader with a good work ethic. He proved to be a tough player in 2003 when he played through rib and shoulder injuries, electing to wait until after the season to have surgery. The biggest questions with Croyle are his injury history and his size. He missed his senior year of high school and the majority of his junior season at Alabama with a torn ACL. He also had a separated shoulder his sophomore season. Brodie has good height for a quarterback, but he will need to bulk up to take the pounding he will receive in the NFL. Other than those two question marks, Croyle has all the physical tools and intangibles you look for in an NFL signal caller. He has a good chance to be a first day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
