Bruce Eugene attended Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans, Louisiana. He wasn’t highly recruited coming out of high school and he didn’t even receive a scholarship offer from Grambling. Eugene sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt freshman before earning the team’s starting quarterback job in 2002. He completed 269 of 543 pass attempts that year for 4,455 yards and 43 touchdowns with just 16 interceptions. He also rushed for 535 yards and 9 more touchdowns on the season. He led all I-AA players in total yards that season and was named SWAC offensive player of the year for his effort. He was also named first team all-SWAC and I-AA all-American. Bruce had another solid season in 2003, completing 285 of 528 attempts for 3,807 yards and 34 touchdowns with just 13 interceptions. He added 412 yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground. For the second consecutive year Eugene led all I-AA players in total offensive yards and was named I-AA all-American. He ran into some bad luck the following year when he tore his ACL in the season opener against Alcorn State, effectively ending his 2004 season. He finished with 13 completions on 29 attempts for 169 yards and 1 interception prior to the injury. Eugene returned to have a monster season as a senior in 2005. He completed 256 of 456 attempts for 4,408 yards and 56 touchdowns with just 6 interceptions on the year. He was named SWAC offensive player of the year and second team all-American for his performance as a senior.

Bruce Eugene has a great deal of experience at the quarterback position, having started three of the last four seasons for Grambling, missing the 2004 season due to injury. Eugene has a cannon for an arm with the ability to make all the throws required of an NFL quarterback. He will stand in the pocket and deliver the football with a defender in his face. He throws a nice tight spiral and has good accuracy on his deep passes. He has good mobility for a player his size—He can get out of the pocket and make a throw on the run or make a play with his feet when needed. He lacks great timed speed but he has great feet for a player his size and he can be difficult to bring down once he gets moving. Bruce Eugene is a hard worker and a true “student of the game” who spends a lot of time studying film. That time has paid off for Eugene, who knows how to read opposing defenses and minimize mistakes. Eugene didn’t play against top competition in college and his mechanics need refinement. He operated primarily out of the shotgun at Grambling and will need to adjust to playing under center at the next level. He lacks great height for an NFL quarterback and while he is 260 pounds, he isn’t as overweight as one might think. He has had some weight problems in the past, ballooning up over 300 pounds at one point. He will need to work on keeping his weight down in the future. He did have the ACL injury in 2004 which may cause some scouts to question his durability. Bruce Eugene has most of the physical tools and all of the intangibles you look for in a quarterback. He is still a bit raw, but he has a chance to be selected on the second day as a developmental quarterback or be picked up as an undrafted free agent. Either way he will be in an NFL camp this summer.
