Background

Calvin Johnson attended Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, Georgia. Calvin played receiver on the football team where he caught 34 passes for 646 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior. As a senior he caught 40 passes for 736 yards and 8 touchdowns on his way to all-state honors. He was considered to be one of the top 10 receiver prospects in the nation and a top 5 overall prospect in the state of Georgia. He accepted a scholarship to Georgia Tech where he went on to lead the team in receiving as a true freshman. His 48 receptions for 837 yards and 7 touchdowns were all school freshman records. He was named first team all-ACC and conference freshman of the year. As a sophomore, Calvin once again led the team in receiving with 54 receptions for 888 yards and 6 touchdowns. He was named first team all-ACC and first team all-America at the conclusion of the season. As a junior, Calvin set career highs in receptions (76), yards (1,202), and receiving touchdowns (15). He was named first team all-ACC for the third consecutive season and conference player of the year. He was a first team all-America selection for the second consecutive season and was received the Biletnikoff Award for being the nation’s top receiver. Calvin Johnson has another year of eligibility remaining; however, he has decided to skip his senior year to enter the 2007 NFL draft.

Analysis

Calvin Johnson has been the leading receiver for Georgia Tech every year since his true freshman season in 2004. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player, having not missed a single game due to injury. He is an extremely hard worker and a person of great character. Calvin has an incredible combination of size, strength, and speed for a receiver. He runs precise routes and has excellent hands, rarely dropping a catchable pass. He will go up and catch the ball at its highest point. His size/speed combination creates matchup problems for just about any defensive back who lines up against him. He is a tough player who will go over the middle and make a difficult catch in traffic. He has very good body control and will make some incredible catches at times. His strength allows him to break tackles and gain additional yardage. His size along with his leaping ability makes him a dangerous threat in the redzone. He has the speed to gain separation and stretch the defense. He does a good job of getting yards after the catch. He is also a very capable blocker with the potential to get even better over time. Calvin Johnson is one of the most complete receivers to enter the draft in quite some time. He should be an immediate impact player for the team that selects him and he should have quite a few pro bowls in his future. Calvin is arguably the best overall player in the available and should be a top 3 pick in the 2007 NFL draft.

Former Lions pick aboard shuttle THE TICKER

Who says the Lions aren't rocket scientists? A former Lions draft choice, Leland Melvin, is an astronaut aboard the Atlantis, the space shuttle that has been waiting to blast off from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Its mission is to deliver the European Space Agency's Columbus laboratory at the International Space Laboratory.

Total bias: Week 14 over/under picks

I have been knocked out of fantasy football for the year. I was in two pools and didn't make the playoffs in either league. The worst part was the insulting cast of nimwits who made the postseason ahead of me.
