Chad Greenway played quarterback, free safety and returned punts for his high school football team where he also served as team captain for three years and won two state titles. He was a four-sport athlete who also lettered in basketball, baseball and track. He wasn’t highly recruited coming out of high school and sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. He missed the first four games of the 2002 season due to a knee injury he suffered during spring practices. He earned a starting job as a sophomore and racked up 132 tackles on his way to a second team all-big ten selection. He was a first team all-big ten selection as a junior when he had 113 tackles, 3 sacks and 3 interceptions. He was also named special teams player of the year that season. Greenway could have entered the 2005 NFL draft but he opted to return to Iowa for his senior season. He should be among the top linebackers selected in the 2006 NFL draft.
Analysis
Chad Greenway has a good combination of size and speed for a linebacker. He has the ability to make plays all over the field and he is an extremely hard worker who plays every down as if it were his last. He is fundamentally sound against the run and rarely misses a tackle. He will get a little too aggressive at times which will cause him to overpursue the ballcarrier. He has the ability to drop back in coverage and has proven to be effective in that role with three interceptions as a junior and eleven passes broken up in 2003 and 2004 combined. His speed allows him to effectively cover most tight ends. He will struggle to fight off blocks of opposing offensive linemen at times and he isn't very effective as an edge pass rusher. A serious knee injury he sustained in 2002 could raise questions about his durability to some teams. However, Greenway is one of the most talented linebacker prospects available which should make him a first round pick in the 2006 NFL draft. Player News Feed
