Charlie Frye is a fifth-year senior, having redshirted his freshman year in 2000. He has a lot of experience as a starting quarterback, having started 44 games in the past four years at the University of Akron. He considered entering the 2004 NFL draft where he would’ve most likely been a third or fourth round pick, but he opted to stay at Akron for his senior season. At 6’4, 228 with a 4.60 40, Frye has a good combination of size and speed for a quarterback. He doesn’t have a cannon for an arm, but he has enough arm strength to make most of the throws. On a good day, he can be as accurate as any quarterback in the nation, but he isn’t as consistent as you would like him to be. He stands strong in the pocket and delivers a nice pass even with defenders in his face. He has a quick release and throws a nice tight spiral. He is probably the best in the nation when it comes to evading the rush and making an accurate throw on the run. He needs to improve his ability to read defenses and work on taking what the defense gives him rather than forcing a ball into coverage. He is an extremely tough player who always seems to play though injuries. He has proven to be a great leader who commands respect from his teammates. Charlie has been very active in the community and he always visits the local children’s hospital the day before each home game. Charlie Frye might be the best senior quarterback coming out this season. One big knock on him is his level of competition. He has played some pretty weak teams in the MAC, but he has also played very well against a couple big schools as well. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of other MAC quarterbacks who have become very good NFL players. Those players include Chad Pennington, Byron Leftwich, and the NFL’s 2004 offensive rookie of the year, Ben Roethlisberger. Charlie Frye should become the first player in Akron history to be drafted in the first two rounds of the NFL draft. Player News Feed
