Chris Henry attended Edison High School in Stockton, California where he was a four-sport athlete, playing football, baseball, basketball, and running track. Chris served as captain of the track team his junior and senior years. As a junior, Chris played fullback, rushing for 300 yards on the season. Chris accepted a scholarship to Arizona where he played two games as a true freshman, rushing for 33 yards on 14 attempts. He caught 1 pass for 14 yards. Chris suffered a leg injury, effectively ending his season. He was awarded a redshirt, giving him an extra year of eligibility. He returned the following season to carry the ball 56 times for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns. He caught 2 passes for a loss of three yards on the season. As a sophomore, Henry rushed for 119 yards on 34 attempts and caught 2 passes for a loss of 3 yards. He finally saw significant action as a redshirt junior, carrying the ball 165 times for 581 yards and 7 touchdowns. He caught 21 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown. Chris still has another year of eligibility remaining; however, he has opted to skip his senior season to enter the 2007 NFL draft.
Analysis
Chris Henry spent his first two seasons at Arizona as the backup to Mike Bell before splitting time as a junior. He has an excellent combination of size and speed for a running back. He size allows him to pound the ball between the tackles. He can be difficult to bring down with the strength to break tackles and gain additional yardage. He has the speed to get to the outside and turn the corner. He wasn’t used much as a receiver at Arizona (26 career receptions) but he did show he had reliable hands as a junior. Since he only has approximately 260 career carries, he hasn’t had a lot of wear and tear on his body. That can also work against him because he doesn’t have a lot of starting experience and he has never proven he can carry the load by himself over the course of an entire season. He has an upright running style which can make him susceptible to injury. He lacks great vision and though he has great straight line speed, he isn’t a very elusive runner in the open field. He needs to improve his pass protection to become an every down back at the next level. Chris Henry is a player who hasn’t been very productive in the past and would’ve benefited from another year in college; however, his strong workout performance could move him up to an early second day or possibly even a late first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
