Background

Connor Hughes attended Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, Virginia where he played football and soccer. Connor served as team captain on the soccer team in each of his final two seasons, earning all-state honors each season after being named district player of the year as a sophomore. As a junior in football, Connor set the state career XP record with 173. He was named first team all-state for his performance as a junior. As a senior, Connor extended his state career XP record to 241. He finished third in state history with 30 career field goals and first nation with most points by a kicker in his career. He also set the state record for longest field goal in a playoff game with a 49 yard kick. He helped his team to an 11-2 record and a state championship as a senior, on his way to being named first team all-state for the second consecutive year. Connor was also an outstanding student who graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Virginia where he split time with fellow freshman kicker, Kurt Smith, before taking over the starting job late in the season. Connor tied the school record for most points in a game by a freshman kicker with 12 points against Maryland. He finished his first season with 31 points (16-17 XP, 5-6 FG) on the year. Connor had a near perfect season as a sophomore, connecting on all 40 of his extra point attempts and 23 of his 25 field goal attempts for a career high 140 points. Connor had a solid season as a junior, making 42 of 45 extra point attempts and 17 of 24 field goal attempts to finish second on the team in scoring with 93 points. Connor had another near perfect season as a senior, connecting on all 36 extra point attempts and 21 of his 24 field goal attempts to give him 99 points on the year.

Analysis

Connor Hughes has a great deal of experience, having started the past four seasons at Virginia. During that time he has proven to be nearly automatic on extra points (134-138) and field goals of 40 yards or less (50-55). He has the leg to kick longer field goals but his accuracy goes down a bit. He is 16-24 in his career from 40+ yards including 5-8 from 50+ yards with a career long of 53 yards. Connor has been one of the most consistent kickers in the nation over the past few seasons. He will be in camp with a team this summer and he could be a late round pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
