DJ Shockley attended North Clayton High School in College Park, Georgia where he was a four-sport athlete, playing football, baseball, basketball, and running track. DJ was a three-year starter at quarterback on the team his father, Don Shockley, coached. As a junior he totaled 1,352 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. He also rushed for 733 yards and 9 touchdowns. As a senior he finished with 1,861 passing yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing for 864 yards and 9 more scores. He was named first team all-state for his play as a senior. He was considered to be one of the top quarterback prospects in the nation. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Georgia where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. Shockley saw limited action as a reserve quarterback over the next three seasons while David Greene was the starter. During that time he completed 67 of 133 passes for 967 yards and 10 touchdowns with 4 interceptions. After David Greene graduated and was drafted by the Seahawks, Shockley earned the starting quarterback job. As a senior he completed 173 of 310 passes for 2,588 yards and 24 touchdowns with just 5 interceptions. He was named first team all-SEC for his play as a senior.
Analysis
DJ Shockley is a hard worker and an excellent leader. He has a strong arm which enables him to make all the throws, as well as a very quick release. He makes good decisions, taking what the defense gives him, and he rarely turns the ball over. He has good athleticism which gives him the ability to escape the rush and make a play with his feet when needed. He does have a tendency to run too early though. DJ isn’t the most accurate passer and he needs to improve his ability to read defenses. He also has had some injury problems in his career as well. DJ Shockley is still pretty raw and only has one year of experience as a starter. He lacks ideal height for the quarterback position but he does have a good deal of upside. He has a chance to be a late round pick as a developmental quarterback. Player News Feed
