Background

Daryn Colledge grew up in North Pole, Alaska where he was a three-sport athlete in high school, playing football, baseball, and throwing shot put for the track team. Daryn didn’t start playing football until his senior year of high school. He was named first team all-state for his play on defense and honorable mention all-state on offense and as a punter on special teams. He was also first team all-conference following his lone season in high school. Colledge wasn’t highly recruited coming out of high school. He went to Boise State where he sat out the 2001 season as a 235 pound redshirt. By the start of his redshirt freshman season in 2002, Colledge had earned the team’s starting left tackle job, a position he would hold onto for the next four years. Daryn was named Boise State’s “outstanding lineman” as well as second team all-WAC for his performance in 2003. Following his junior season, Colledge received first team all-WAC honors and was named the WAC’s best lineman. He enters 2006 as one of many outstanding offensive tackle prospects available in upcoming NFL draft.

Analysis

Daryn Colledge has a great deal of experience, having started at left tackle for the past four years at Boise State. He has a great combination of strength and athleticism, but he lacks great size for a tackle. He has proven to be a very durable player who hasn’t missed a single start during his career at Boise State. He is a hard worker who is constantly striving for continuous improvement in his game. He is a technically sound pass blocker who played in a pass-oriented offense. He does a good job against speed rushers and he possesses the “mean streak” you like to see in an offensive lineman. He isn’t a dominating run blocker and he may need to bulk up some to handle some of the larger defensive linemen in the NFL, but he does have a good frame to work with. Other than size and run blocking ability, the only other knock on Colledge is the fact that he didn’t play against the highest level of competition in the WAC. Daryn Colledge has all the tools you look for in a left tackle. He has excellent footwork and athleticism. He also has all the intangibles that make him a great player as well as a great person to have on your football team. He is one of many excellent tackles who should hear their names called in the first two rounds of the 2006 NFL draft.
