Exclusive with On the Clock Draft. Listen Now! Background
In high school, Davin Joseph was an all-state football player and wrestler. He was the 8th ranked heavyweight in the state of Florida his senior year. In football, Joseph was a four-year starter at both defensive tackle and offensive guard. He was named Broward County defensive player of the year for his performance as a senior. Davin racked up 100 tackles and 24 sacks his final year in high school. He was considered to be one of the top offensive guard prospects in the nation coming out of high school but he signed with Oklahoma, who recruited him as a defensive tackle. It wasn’t long before Davin moved to the offensive side of the ball where he played in 12 of 13 games, starting in the big 12 championship game and the Rose Bowl. Joseph earned freshman all-big 12 honors for his performance that year. By his sophomore season, Davin Joseph was a full-time starter at right guard. He started 12 games that year and was named second team academic all-big 12 for his performance in the classroom. Going into his junior season, Joseph found himself on the field a lot once again, starting every single game at right guard that year. Due to the loss of tackles Jammal Brown and Wes Sims, Joseph was forced to move to left tackle as a senior, proving himself to be one of the most versatile offensive linemen in the nation. Davin Joseph enters 2006 as one of the top interior offensive line prospects available in the NFL draft.
Analysis
Davin Joseph is an extremely versatile lineman who has started at both right guard and left tackle during his time at the University of Oklahoma. He has a great deal of experience, having started over three seasons against top competition in the big 12. Davin has proven to be a very durable player, having only missed one start since the big 12 championship in 2002. He is an aggressive player who possesses the “mean streak” you like to see in an offensive lineman. He is a technically sound player with good athleticism. The academic all-big 12 selection is very intelligent and rarely ever misses an assignment. Many offensive linemen are strong in one area and weak in another. This is not the case for Joseph who is equally good at both run blocking and pass protection. He has pretty good size and long arms which allow him to keep defenders away from his body. He does a good job of picking up the blitz, but needs to work on his ability to get to the second level in the running game. He doesn’t always block well in space and he has trouble at times when asked to pull. Joseph moved to left tackle as a senior and struggled there at times. He lacks the footwork and ability to block in space that you look for in a left tackle at the professional level. He projects better as a guard but may need to bulk up some and increase his strength to better handle larger defensive tackles in the NFL. Davin Joseph is a tough player and a hard worker with good upside. He should be a second round pick in April. Player News Feed
