Background

Demetrice “Dee” Webb attended Ed White High School in Jacksonville, Florida where he played football and ran track. He played special teams as a freshman before earning a starting position as a sophomore. He played cornerback and running back his second year, rushing for 820 yards on offense and racking up 8 interceptions on defense. As a junior he served as team captain, rushing for 780 yards and totaling 10 interceptions. He moved from running back to quarterback as a senior again serving as team captain. He passed for 450 yards and 15 touchdowns, while rushing for 645 yards and 15 more scores. He intercepted 8 passes on defense, returning 5 of them for touchdowns on his way to team MVP honors. He was named first team all-state and regional player of the year for his performance as a senior. He was considered to be one of the top five cornerback prospects in the nation and was selected to play in the annual California-Florida all-star game. He was recruited by schools such as Miami and Florida State but opted to attend the University of Florida instead. He played 11 games as a reserve defensive back and special teams player his true freshman season, missing two games due to an ankle injury. He finished the season with 11 tackles and 1 pass break-up. Dee earned a starting cornerback spot as a sophomore, totaling 61 tackles, 10 pass break-ups and 3 interceptions on the year. He was named the team’s most outstanding defensive back at the conclusion of the season. Dee had another solid season as a junior, finishing with 46 tackles, 1 interception, and a career high 13 pass break-ups. He does have another year of eligibility left; however, he decided to leave school early to enter the 2006 NFL draft.

Analysis

Florida cornerback Dee Webb is one of the many good underclassman prospects to declare for the 2006 NFL draft. He is an athletic corner with fluid hips, good speed and change of direction ability. He has good closing speed and doesn’t give up many big plays. He doesn’t get many interceptions (4 in his career), but he is able to get his hands on the ball and break-up a lot of passes. Dee is a physical player who will step up and make plays against the run. He has proven to be a very good open field tackler. He does lack ideal size for a cornerback and he needs to really improve his technique. Character issues may also come into play for Webb. He had a run in with the police after a gun he owned was fired into another apartment by one of his guests earlier this year. No charges were filed against Webb in the case. Dee Webb is a player who would’ve benefited from another year at Florida. He is still pretty raw but he is a hard worker with a great deal of upside. He should be a late first or early second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
