Background

Demetrius Williams played high school football for De La Salle, a catholic prep school in Concord, California that won a record 151 straight games from 1992-2004. He was a two year starter who played both receiver and cornerback. As a senior, Williams caught 34 passes for 829 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was one of the top high school prospects in the nation at the receiver position and decided to attend the University of Oregon after graduation. He sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt and saw very little action the following season. His sophomore year was a breakout year for Williams. He hauled in 47 passes for 886 yards with 8 touchdowns, averaging just under 19 yards per reception on the year. His junior season was a disappointment to say the least. He suffered a turf toe injury prior to the season which plagued him throughout the year. He did miss some action that year, but he displayed his toughness playing through the injury most of the season. The effect on his play was obvious—He once again caught 47 passes but this time his yards dropped to just below 600 and his yards per reception dropped to 12.6. This was mostly due to his lack of ability to make cuts due to the injury as well as him being less elusive in the open field, resulting in less yards after the catch. He did have his moments that year, catching 12 passes against Washington, the second best performance in school history. Williams entered his senior season healthy and ready to prove himself once again as one of the top receivers in college football.

Analysis

Demetrius Williams is a tall, slender receiver. He may benefit from adding 10-15 pounds of bulk and increase his strength. He runs faster than he appears to due to his long strides. He does a good job of avoiding the jam at the line of scrimmage and he isn’t afraid to go over the middle and make a tough catch in traffic. He has the ability to beat defenders deep and his height, leaping ability, and long arms allow him to go up and get the ball at its highest point. He has good hands but he will lose concentration at times causing him to not catch the ball with his hands or to run before he has the ball secured. Once he has the ball he is a good open field runner who gets a lot of yards after the catch and is a threat turn a short pass into a long gain. He is a willing blocker in the running game but he needs to do a better job of using his size to put him in better position to make the catch. He is an extremely hard worker and a tough player who played through injuries the majority of his junior season. He needs to work on running more precise routes but he has all the tools to develop into a #1 receiver at the professional level.
