Background

Deshawn Wynn attended Reading High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a senior, Wynn rushed for 2,283 yards, averaging 9.3 yards per carry. He also scored 30 touchdowns on the season. He rushed for over 2,000 yards and scored 30 or more touchdowns in three of his four seasons at Reading. He was considered to be one of the top running back prospects in the nation and accepted a scholarship to the University of Florida where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He finished third on the team in rushing the following season with 540 yards on 115 attempts. He also caught 12 passes for 82 yards. He led the team in touchdowns with 8 scores on the year. Those 8 touchdowns (7 rushing, 1 receiving) were good for third all-time by a freshman at UF, trailing only Emmitt Smith and Fred Taylor. Deshawn missed four games as a sophomore due to a groin injury, causing his production to drop significantly. He finished the season with 217 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns on just 58 carries. He added 5 receptions for 75 yards. He saw action in 11 of 12 games as a junior in 2005, leading the team in rushing with 621 yards and 7 touchdowns on 130 attempts. He also caught 12 passes for 161 yards and 2 more scores.

Analysis

Deshawn Wynn has a good combination of size and strength for a running back. He is a power back who does most of his damage between the tackles. He has excellent lower body strength which allows him to break tackles and makes him a very difficult player to bring down. He has just average hands and wasn’t used much as a receiver at Florida. He lacks great speed and may have trouble turning the corner at the next level. His lack of speed will have an adverse effect on his ability to break long runs or stretch the defense in the passing game. He is slow to hit the hole and needs to work on finishing his runs. With just one season as a full-time starter in college, Deshawn didn’t have very much wear and tear on his body. On the other hand, he hasn’t proven he can carry the load by himself over the course of an entire season. He does have a good deal of potential and could move up draft boards if he impresses during predraft workouts. At this point, Deshawn Wynn looks to be a second day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.

Running backs can make or break a fantasy team
2007-11-07 10:09:29

Running backs generally make up the first round of most fantasy football drafts. Often times, not all of them work out. It is important to draft your stud running back's back-up, what we call a "handcuff" in fantasy football. Your stud running back usually has a great passing game and/or offensive line that will make him productive in case your star tailback goes down.
