Analysis

Eric Knott was one of the best tight ends in the country coming out of high school in 1999. He began his career at Michigan State as a defensive lineman before moving to tight end prior to the 2002 season. He has a good deal of experience, having been a starter at the tight end position for the better part of the past three seasons for the Spartans. He has good size and average speed for a tight end. As a receiver, Knott gets a good release off the line, has very good hands, and is an above average route runner. He isn't much of a threat down the field due to his lack of great speed, but he is very reliable on the shorter patterns and he does a good job of getting yards after the catch. He has enough size to block in the running game and he has proven to be a very capable blocker but he needs to do a better job of finishing his blocks. Knott is a very talented player who has not yet lived up to his ability. He may need a good coach to push him for him to be successful at the professional level. He has had some off the field problems in the past which may have an adverse effect on his draft stock. In 1999 he pled guilty to fourth-degree sexual misconduct in an incident that involved a 13 year old girl. Knott has first day talent but his lack of desire and character issues could push him back to the second of the draft.
