Eric Wright attended Arch Bishop Riordan High School in San Francisco, California where he played running back and defensive back on the football team. As a senior, Eric rushed for 1,166 yards and 17 touchdowns. He caught 18 passes for 268 yards and 4 touchdowns on the year. On defense, Eric finished with 80 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, and 10 pass break-ups. He was named first team all-metro and all-northern California co-MVP. He accepted a scholarship to USC where he sat out the 2003 season as a redshirt. He began the next season as a reserve defensive back before working his way into the starting lineup during the last month of the season. He started four games, finishing with 33 tackles, 1 interception, and 6 pass break-ups, helping USC to a national championship. He also averaged over 23 yards per kickoff as a return specialist. Eric was accused of rape and over 100 ecstasy pills were discovered in his apartment. He opted to transfer to UNLV and was forced to sit out the 2005 season due to NCAA transfer rules. As a junior, Eric quickly moved into the starting lineup for the Rebels. He totaled 29 tackles, 1 interception, and 8 pass break-ups on his way to second team all-MWC honors. Eric Wright still has another year of eligibility left; however, he has opted to skip his senior season to enter the 2007 NFL draft.
Analysis
Eric Wright started at USC in 2004 and UNLV this past year, having sat out the 2005 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He has a good combination of size, speed, and athleticism for a cornerback. He has fluid hips and a good backpedal. His speed allows him to keep up with just about any receiver who lines up against him, as well as recover on the occasion that he is beat. He has good ball skills and solid hands. He will step up and be an asset in run support. Wright does take chances going for the interception at times which can lead to a big play for the offense. He isn’t the biggest corner and he will have problems with bigger, more physical receivers. He only has two years of starting experience and he does need to improve his technique. Character is going to be a big issue that may cause Wright to slide on draft day. He was accused of rape at USC and though it couldn’t be proven that they were his, 136 ecstasy pills were discovered in his apartment. Eric Wright has all the tools to develop into a good corner at the next level. He has a good deal of upside and should be a first or second round selection in the 2007 NFL draft. Player News Feed
