Analysis

Frank Gore began his career at Miami as a promising young freshman who averaged 9.1 yards per carry (2nd best YPC average in school history) backing up clinton portis in 2001. He was expected to start over Willis McGahee in 2002, but sat out the season as a medical redshirt with a torn ACL. In 2003, Gore tore another ACL halfway through the season and was sidelined for the remainder of the year. He finally had a healthy season this past year, rushing for just under 1,000 yards with eight touchdowns while splitting time at running back for the Hurricanes. He decided to leave college with a year or eligiblity remaining which was probably a smart move because another knee injury as a senior would would have killed his hopes of being drafted. He is no longer the explosive runner he once was before his injuries. He is more of a between the tackles runner now. He is a very instinctive runner, who hits the hole hard and has good vision. He has good change of direction ability but no longer has the breakaway speed he once had. He needs to improve his receiving ability as well as his ability to effectively pickup the blitz if he wants to be an every down back in the NFL. At his pro day Gore came in smaller (208lbs) and slower (4.65) than expected. He also made the lowest score of all players on the wonderlic (6 out of 50) which makes you wonder about his ability to learn an NFL playbook. Gore was once a player who looked to be a sure first day pick in the future, but his inability to put together two consecutive healthy seasons in four years of college ball and his poor predraft workouts should push him back to the second day of the 2005 NFL draft.
