Background

Garrett Wolfe attended Holy Cross High School in Chicago, Illinois where he played running back on the football team. As a junior, Wolfe carried the ball 272 times for 2,270 yards and 32 touchdowns. He averaged 42 yards per kickoff return on 9 attempts, taking 3 back for touchdowns. He also returned 4 punts averaging 36 yards per return with 1 touchdown. As a senior, Wolfe carried the ball 288 times for 2,041 yards and 24 touchdowns. He was named team offensive MVP and league MVP following the season. He was also named first team all-metro, all-area, and all-state. He owned 11 school records before his career was over. Garrett accepted a scholarship to Northern Illinois where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt, then the 2003 season due to academic reasons. He returned as the team’s third running back in 2004, earning a starting job just a few weeks into the season. He finished the year with 1,656 yards and 18 touchdowns on 256 attempts. He averaged 21 yards per kickoff return on 11 attempts and added 10 receptions for 117 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was named first team all-MAC for his performance as a sophomore. As a junior, Wolfe rushed for 1,580 yards and 16 touchdowns on 242 attempts. He also caught 20 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown on his way to first team all-MAC honors. Garrett Wolfe saved his best for last as a senior.

Analysis

Garrett Wolfe has been the starting running back at Northern Illinois for the past three seasons. Wolfe is an explosive, compact runner who is a threat to take it the distance every time he touches the football. He hits the hole quickly, displays good vision and is a great cutback runner. Despite his small stature, Wolfe has powerful legs and isn’t afraid to run between the tackles. He does a good job of finishing his runs, always falling forward to gain additional yardage. His speed allows him to turn the corner on the outside and he is always a threat to break the long run. He is an elusive runner in the open field who has a knack for making defenders miss. Although he wasn’t utilized in this way very much in college, Wolfe has reliable hands and he is a threat out of the backfield in the receiving game, particularly when you get him the ball out in space. The biggest weakness for Garrett Wolfe is his lack of size. He lacks the prototypical size for a NFL running back and he most likely wouldn’t be able to hold up as a featured back over the course of a full 16 game season. Another concern for Garrett which goes along with his size would be his blocking. He will need to improve his blocking to be on the field on third down at the next level. Garrett Wolfe is a talented player who would rank higher if he were 3 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier. He will find a spot in the NFL as a change of pace back and could also contribute on special teams as a kick returner. He should be a mid-round pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
