Greg Blue was a two-sport athlete at Banneker High School in the Atlanta area, playing both football and basketball. As a senior Blue recorded 89 tackles, 4 interceptions, 14 pass breakups, and 6 forced fumbles, while leading his team to a 9-2 record and a state playoff appearance. He was first team all-state and was invited to play in the 2001 Georgia North-South all-star game. After his senior season, Blue was considered to be one of the top 25 safety prospects in the nation. He accepted a scholarship at the University of Georgia where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. Blue missed the majority of the 2002 spring practices due to a hamstring injury, but returned in time for the season where he totaled 42 tackles in a reserve role. Greg began his sophomore season as a reserve once again. He got three starts towards the end of the season and totaled 42 tackles and 3 pass breakups on the year. As a junior, Blue earned a starting safety position. He responded by finishing second on the team in tackles with 80 stops on the year. He also had a sack and forced three fumbles. Greg was named “best tackler” at the conclusion of spring practices in 2005. He was elected the team’s defensive co-captain for the 2005 season by his teammates. He was once again a starter and finished second in tackles with 88 on the season. Greg had career highs in interceptions and pass breakups as a senior with 2 and 5 respectively. He was named first team all-SEC and all-American for his performance following his final year with the Bulldogs.
Analysis
Greg Blue has a good combination of size and speed for a safety. He is a very physical player who hits hard and is a good tackler. He is an excellent run stopper and has a knack for forcing the ball loose with his big hits. He is an imposing player who punishes opposing receivers that attempt to go over the middle against him. He doesn’t get a lot of interceptions and he needs to work on his pass coverage technique. He has good hips but needs to improve his backpedal. He does have great range and excellent recovery speed when he is beaten. He can be overaggressive at times in the run game which can lead to a big play going the other way. He also needs to improve his ability to read plays. Greg Blue is a player who has all the physical tools to be an impact player as a safety at the professional level. He could play strong or free safety but is probably better suited to play strong safety until he improves his pass coverage. He should be a first day pick in the 2006 NFL draft. Player News Feed
