Background

Henry Tolbert attended A.H. Walker High School in Birmingham, Alabama where he played football and ran track. Henry was a member of the regional championship 4x100 meter relay team. He played running back on the football team. Though he only played five games as a senior due to injury, Henry managed to rush for 600 yards and gain another 400 yards receiving. He also served as a return specialist, accumulating 250 yards as a kick returner and another 150 yards as a punt returner. He received all-Metro honors and was named Gridiron Association receiver of the year. Henry went on to play at Grambling University where he started out as a running back. As a freshman he carried the ball 53 times for 381 yards and a touchdown with an impressive 7.2 yard per carry average. He also caught 31 passes for 391 yards and 3 more scores. As a sophomore, Henry moved to receiver where he caught 29 passes for 563 yards and 6 touchdowns with a career-high 19.4 yards per reception. Henry had a breakout year as a junior, catching 74 passes for 1,391 yards and 19 touchdowns, all career highs. Henry also had a rushing touchdown giving him a school record 20 touchdowns on the season. He was named second team all-SWAC for his play as a junior. After a monster year, Henry could’ve entered the 2005 NFL draft but he opted to return to Grambling for his senior season. Though the departure of star quarterback Bruce Eugene hurt Tolbert’s stats as a senior, he still managed to put up solid numbers with 48 receptions for 730 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was named second team all-SWAC for the second consecutive season.

Analysis

Henry Tolbert is a versatile player who has started at receiver the past three seasons after playing running back as a freshman in 2003. During that time, he has proven to be a very durable player who has only missed one game in his career due to injury. He is a reliable receiver who catches the ball with his hands rather than the “body catch”. Once he has the ball in his hands, Tolbert is a threat to take it the distance at any time. He is a great open field runner who can make defenders miss and turn a short pass into a long gain. He is a very good deep threat with the speed to gain separation and stretch the field against almost any defender that lines up against him. He is a tough player who isn’t afraid to go over the middle and make a difficult catch in traffic. He lacks ideal height for a receiver and may have trouble against bigger, stronger defensive backs at the next level. He has only been playing the receiver position for three years and he has yet to reach his full potential. Henry Tolbert is a versatile player who could project as a running back or receiver at the next level. He has a good deal of upside and should be a second day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.

They're tough to pass in the fast lane

Hampton University's cornerbacks share a bond of excellence they don't intend on letting Grambling State's receivers break. When Travarous Bain isn't arguing with Calvin Bannister about who is the better cornerback for Hampton University, he's watching game film with him. And when Bannister isn't trying to outperform Bain in some practice drill, he's offering his teammate encouragement.
