Background

Ingle Martin attended Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee where he played quarterback and also kicked some field goals on the football team. As a senior, Martin completed 62 of 137 attempts for 964 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also rushed for 935 yards on the season. He was successful on 6 of 9 field goal attempts including 3 from 50 yards or more. His longest field goal was a school record 56 yards. Ingle was considered to be the top player in the state of Tennessee and one of the top quarterback prospects in the nation. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Florida following his senior season. He spent the 2001 season on the scout team, earning the school’s John Eibner award for the scout team’s “unsung hero”. He was awarded a redshirt and an additional year of eligibility following the 2001 season. The following year, Martin served as the backup to starting quarterback and current Chicago Bear Rex Grossman. He also saw action at receiver that year as well. He finished the season completing 7 of 10 passes for 96 yard. He also rushed 11 times for 51 yards and caught 2 passes for 14 yards. Martin also saw action at punter that year, averaging 35.2 yards per attempt on 46 punts. As a sophomore, Martin earned the team’s starting quarterback job, completing 47 of 77 attempts for 654 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, before being replaced by Chris Leak four games into the season. After losing his starting job, Martin decided to transfer to Furman. As a junior he completed 198 of 320 pass attempts for 2791 yards and 22 touchdowns with just 9 interceptions. Martin also punted eight times, averaging 31.2 yards per punt. Five of his eight punts were downed inside the opponent’s 20 yard line. As a senior, Martin completed 212 of 350 passes for a career high 2959 yards and 20 touchdowns. He threw 13 interceptions on the year. He punted 33 times for a 43.2 yard average, including a career high 70 yard punt in the playoffs. He was named second team all-conference for his play at quarterback and first team all-conference for his play as the team’s punter.

Analysis

Ingle Martin has a good combination of size and athleticism for an NFL quarterback. He has great leadership ability and was named Furman’s team captain as a senior. During his time in college, he has proven to be a very durable player. He has solid mechanics and a strong arm with the ability to make all the throws required of an NFL quarterback. He reads defenses well and is extremely accurate with his short to intermediate range passes. He puts good touch on his shorter passes but he needs to improve his accuracy on his deep passes. He is a tough player who will stand in the pocket and deliver the football with a defender in his face. He has good athleticism—He will escape the pass rush and make an accurate throw on the run. The former high school option quarterback also has the ability to make a play with his feet when needed. Overall he has good decision-making ability, although he will make poor decisions at times when he receives a lot of pressure. Level of competition is one of the major questions with Martin. He was unable to hold onto the starting quarterback job at Florida and he has played the past two seasons against low-level competition at Furman. Ingle was one of the most impressive performers at the quarterback position at the Scouting Combine. He has a good deal of upside and is also being looked at as a punter which will only add to his draft day value. His combine performance has lifted him from undrafted free agent status to a potential late round pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
