Analysis

J.J. Arrington was a 2003 JUCO transfer from the College of the Canyons. He served primarily as a backup his first year at Cal and really only has one full season of division I starting experience under his belt. His 1,845 rushing yards this past season broke a 29 year old school record for rushing yards in a season previously held by Chuck Muncie. It was also the sixth best single-season rushing performance in Pac-10 history. Arrington was a model of consistency, running for over 100 yards in every single game. He was the only running back in the nation to accomplish such a feat in 2004. Arrington lacks ideal size for a featured back in the NFL, but he plays a lot bigger than he is and he will try to run over bigger defenders at times. He runs low to the ground, gets to the hole quickly and displays good field vision and excellent balance. He is one of the fastest running backs in the draft and is a threat to score from anywhere on the field at any time, but he isn't the most elusive player and he won't make many defenders miss in the open field. He has good hands and can be a reliable receiver out of the backfield. Arrington was benched in 2003 after a series of key fumbles, however he improved in that area this past season only putting the ball on the ground twice in over 250 attempts. J.J. Arrington had an impressive combine and is a player on the rise at the moment. He is a solid first day pick and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go as high as the second round on draft day.
