Background

Jacoby Jones attended St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, Louisiana where he didn’t play football until his junior year. He transferred to Marion Abramson High School in New Orleans prior to his senior season. The 5-7 160 pound receiver wasn’t recruited to play football out of high school. He went to Southeastern Louisiana where he would run track in 2002. He transferred the Lane College in 2003 where he played football, basketball, and ran track. He walked-on to the football team at Lane, becoming an immediate starter. As a freshman, Jacoby caught 36 passes for 677 yards and 7 touchdowns in 10 starts. He averaged 16 yards per kickoff return on 7 attempts and 12 yards per punt return on 4 attempts. He earned all-SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) honors following the season. As a sophomore, Jacoby started all 11 games, catching 46 passes for 664 yards and 5 touchdowns. He averaged 6.4 yards per punt return on 7 attempts and 14.4 yards per kickoff return on 11 attempts. He was named second team all-SIAC after leading the conference in receptions and receiving yards. As a junior, Jacoby caught 50 passes for 587 yards and 3 touchdowns. He averaged 9.6 yards per punt return on 18 attempts and 22.2 yards per kickoff return on 42 attempts. Two of his kickoff returns went for touchdowns. He was named first team all-SIAC as a return specialist and second team all-SIAC as a receiver. As a senior, Jacoby set career highs in receptions (68) and receiving yards (822) with 6 touchdown receptions. He was named SIAC offensive player of the year and league MVP after leading the conference in receiving yards, all-purpose yards, kick return and punt return average. He was finished second in the conference in scoring.

Analysis

Jacoby Jones has been a starting receiver at Lane College for the past four seasons. He is a versatile player who also has the ability to return punts and kickoffs. He is an extremely hard worker with an excellent combination of size and speed for the receiver position. His size allows him to matchup against bigger, more physical defenders and his speed allows him to stretch the field against almost any defensive back that lines up against him. He gets in and out of his breaks quickly and has solid hands. Once he has the ball in his hands, Jones has the ability to make the first defender miss and can be elusive in the open field. His ability to contribute as a return specialist will only add to his draft day value. Though he has four years of starting experience, Jones didn’t play against a high level of competition in college. He is a bit of a tall, lanky receiver who would benefit from adding some bulk and increasing his strength. He needs to work on running more precise routes at the next level. Another criticism of Jones is going to be the fact that he has small hands for a receiver. Jacoby Jones is an excellent physical specimen who has been moving up draft boards since his impressive performance at the East-West Shrine Game. Scouts are reminded of Marques Colston, a small school receiver who was also impressive in the Shrine Game a year ago. With a good showing at the NFL Scouting Combine, Jacoby Jones could become a first day pick. At this point he should be selected on the second day of the 2007 NFL draft.
