Background

Jahmile Addae attended Riverview High School in Valerico, Florida where he played football and ran track. As a senior he totaled 67 tackles, 5 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, 3 forced fumbles, and 8 touchdowns, on his way to first team all-conference and all-county honors. He led Riverview to a 9-3 record and was named to the Florida all-star team. He accepted a scholarship the University of West Virginia where he planned to redshirt but was forced to play late in his freshman season due to injury. He finished his first season with 17 tackles. He earned the team’s starting free safety job the following season and had a great year, totaling 99 tackles, 11 pass break-ups, and 4 interceptions, on his way to first team all-big east honors. He injured his shoulder during the Wisconsin game in 2003, effectively ending his season. He had 8 tackles and a pass-breakup prior to the injury and was awarded a medical redshirt for the season. He returned as a junior with 59 tackles, 4 pass break-ups and 2 interceptions on his way to first team all-big east honors. Jahmile had another solid season as a senior, totaling 64 tackles, 5 pass break-ups and 2 interceptions on the season.

Analysis

Jahmile Addae has a great deal of experience, having started three of the past four seasons at safety for West Virginia. He has good size but just average speed for the position. He is an intelligent player who does a good job of reading plays and reacting to them. He is a fundamentally sound tackler and an extremely hard hitter. He lacks ideal speed but he makes up for it by taking good angles to the ball carrier. He has good strength and sheds blocks well. He is great in zone coverage but really needs to improve his man coverage skills. He lacks great ball skills and won’t make many plays on the football. Jahmile Addae should be able to come in and contribute immediately on special teams; however, he will need to improve his cover skills to be anything more than a backup safety at the next level. He should be a second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
