Analysis

Jared Newberry came to Stanford as a walk-on linebacker in 2000. He redshirted that season and moved into a reserve fullback spot in 2001. He moved to strongside linebacker as a sophomore in 2002 and was a starter there his junior and senior seasons. He is an extremely hard worker and a leader both on and off the field. Jared served as team captain for stanford this past season. He lacks ideal size for a linebacker in the NFL. He struggles when he has to take on blocks and may need to add some bulk and strength to take on larger offensive linemen at the professional level. He has the ability to make plays all over the field and is a fundamentally sound tackler who takes good angles to the ballcarrier. He is very good in coverage. He has good hands and really impressed with his man to man cover skills during senior bowl practices. Jared Newberry was an excellent special teams player in college and should be able to make an impact in that area immediately in the NFL. He has the potential to develop into a solid weakside linebacker at the professional level and should be an early second day pick in the 2005 NFL draft.
