Jarvis Moss attended Ryan High School in Denton, Texas. As a sophomore, Jarvis totaled 61 tackles and 9 sacks, helping Ryan to a state championship game appearance. As a junior he finished with 122 tackles, 28 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles. Ryan once again was in the state championship game and they won. As a senior, Jarvis finished with 81 tackles, 12 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles, despite missing 7 games due to injury. Ryan High School won the state championship for the second consecutive season. Jarvis helped the team to a 30-1 record over his final two seasons. He was invited to play in the U.S. Army all-American game at the conclusion of his senior season. Jarvis was considered to be the top defensive prospect in the entire state of Texas. He was recruited by Texas, Miami, and Florida State; however, he opted to attend the University of Florida instead. A hernia caused Jarvis to miss a portion of spring drills prior to his true freshman season. He played in 1 game before re-injuring himself. He finished the season with 5 tackles and was awarded a medical redshirt giving him an extra year of eligibility. After switching to linebacker in spring drills, Jarvis saw action in just one game, finishing the season with 1 tackle. As a sophomore, Jarvis switched back to defensive end where he saw action in 11 games, finishing with 25 tackles, 7 ½ sacks, and a forced fumble. As a junior, Jarvis had his best season, totaling 56 tackles and 7 ½ sacks, helping Florida to a national championship. Though he does have another year of eligibility remaining, Jarvis opted to skip his final season and enter the 2007 NFL draft.
Analysis
Jarvis Moss has two years of starting experience against top competition in the SEC. He is a versatile player with good athleticism. He is an outstanding pass rusher with good closing speed getting to the quarterback. His quick first step allows him to beat most offensive linemen off the snap. His speed also allows him to chase down running backs from behind in the backfield. He is a good run defender who excels at making plays in the open field. Though he is tall and has long arms, Moss lacks ideal mass for a defensive end. He relies on his speed and athleticism too much and he isn’t very strong at the point of attack. He will have problems getting off blocks of bigger, stronger offensive linemen if he isn’t able to beat them with his speed. He will need to bulk up and increase his strength if he is going to be an every down defensive end at the next level. Jarvis Moss is a versatile player who could project as a defensive end in the 4-3 or an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. He has a ton of upside and could be selected as high as the mid-first round of the 2007 NFL draft. Player News Feed
