Analysis

Jason Campbell has had a difficult career at the University of Auburn. One that has been plagued with inconsistency, with the majority of the blame has been placed squarely on his shoulders. What many people do not realize is it isn’t easy to be consistent when you have four different offensive coordinators in a five year period. As a senior, Campbell finally seemed to get comfortable and he put together his first consistent season of his career. He was redshirted in 2000, he then went on to start a few games in 2001. He has been the full-time starter since 2002 and has improved every single year. He has ideal size for a starting quarterback and pretty good speed as well. He has a cannon for an arm and can make all the throws. His pocket presence isn’t the greatest but he’s one of the best when he’s on the run. He throws well on the move and can make a play with his feet if nothing is open. He is not very skilled at reading defenses and has made poor decisions with the football in the past. He is a very streaky passer. He can be very accurate or very inaccurate, although he has improved in this area as a senior. He needs to work on his progressions as well. Early on in his career he would lock on to a single receiver too often. This improved this past season when he typically would have a safety net if his primary receiver was covered but he still needs to work on finding his third option. Jason Campbell has all the tools to be a very good NFL quarterback. He just has not grasped the mental aspect of the game, which is a determining factor in the success of a quarterback at the professional level. His talent however, cannot be ignored and he has a chance to be a first day pick in April.
