Round: 3 | Pick: #11 | Overall: #75 | Team: Green Bay Packers

Background

Jason Spitz attended Wilson High School before Bolles High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Jason not only played football at Bolles, but was also a member of the weightlifting and track and field teams as well. On the football team, Jason played both offensive guard and defensive tackle. As a junior he totaled 50 tackles and 2 sacks. The following season he finished with 56 tackles and 10 sacks on his way to first team all-first coast and second team all state honors. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Louisville where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. As a redshirt freshman in 2002, Spitz earned the starting right guard job two games into the season. He started the next five games before a knee injury sidelined him for the remainder of the regular season. He returned in time to start the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. As a sophomore, Spitz started all 13 games and was named second team all-conference USA for his performance. Prior to his junior year he saw action at center in practice but he started at guard once again the entire season. Once again Jason Spitz was named second team all-conference USA. Jason considered leaving school for the NFL following his junior season but opted to return to Louisville for his senior year. After Louisville moved to the Big East this past season, Jason Spitz earned all-conference honors for the third straight year, this time as a first team all-big east selection.

Analysis

Jason Spitz is a versatile player who has had experience at every interior offensive line position at Louisville. He did miss a few games due to a knee injury as a freshman, but other than that he has been a very durable player over the past few seasons. Jason has very good intangibles—He is an intelligent player, a hard worker, and a vocal leader in the locker room. He possesses good strength and the “mean streak” you like to see in an interior offensive lineman. He is quick out of his stance, uses his hands well, and can be a dominating run blocker at times. Jason needs to improve his pass blocking in order to become a more complete player at the professional level. He isn’t a great athlete and he struggles when forced to block in space or on the move. He also could benefit from adding some bulk and he has the frame in which to do so. Jason Spitz isn’t likely to be a pro bowl caliber player; however he does have the ability to develop into a solid starter for years to come. He looks like an early second day selection in the 2006 NFL draft.
