Jerome Mathis is one of the most intriguing prospects in the upcoming NFL draft. He had an excellent performance at the Gridiron Classic in January and followed that performance up by running one of the fastest 40 times ever recorded at the NFL combine (4.31). At Hampton University, Mathis was not only a great football player but a track star as well. Mathis finished his career with 93 receptions for 2,465 yards (26.4 avg) and 21 touchdowns. He also carried the football 43 times for 390 yards (9.1 avg) and 3 touchdowns. Mathis was not only a great receiver, but an excellent return specialist as well. He averaged over 35 yards per return as a senior with 5 touchdown returns on the year. He is a little undersized and may need to add some bulk and strength, but he has the speed to beat any defensive back deep or turn a short reception into a long gain. He is a little raw as a receiver. He gets by on pure speed alone too often. He needs to work on running more precise routes to be as effective at a higher level of competition. He also drops too many catchable balls. He needs to learn to catch the ball with his hands more and make sure he has the ball before attempting to run with it. Mathis needs some time to develop as a receiver but he should be able to come in and contribute as a return specialist immediately. He comes from a lower level of competition and is a bit raw as a receiver, but he has the tools to develop into a big-play receiver in time. Jerome Mathis has as much upside as any receiver in the draft. He should be a first day pick and could go as high as the second round on draft day.
