Background

Joe Toledo attended La Costa Canyon High School in Encinitas, California where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He played tight end and defensive end, totaling 34 receptions for 930 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior tight end. On the defensive side of the ball he racked up 51 tackles, 5 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries. He received all-CIF honors for the second consecutive season and was named first team all-avocado league as a senior. He finished his career with 75 receptions for 1,792 yards and 19 touchdowns. He was considered to be one of the top 15 tight end prospects in the nation following his senior season. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Washington where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt after breaking his foot in a preseason practice. Toledo spent the majority of the 2002 season as a reserve tight end and special teams player. He did receive five starts in a two tight end set, totaling 3 receptions for 19 yards. He received the team’s “most outstanding freshman” award after the season. As a sophomore, Toledo missed nine games due to a back injury. He finished the season with just 5 receptions for 70 yards. He received nine starts as a junior, finishing second on the team with 19 receptions for 202 yards and his first career touchdown. Prior to his senior season, Toledo shifted to offensive tackle to replace Khalif Barnes who was selected in the 2005 NFL draft.

Analysis

Joe Toledo spent his first four seasons at Washington as a tight end before shifting to left tackle as a senior to replace the departed Khalif Barnes. Toledo has good size with long arms and the frame to get even bigger. He is an athletic tackle with quick feet that really help him in pass protection. He is an aggressive run blocker who has the ability to get to the second level and take out a linebacker. Joe Toledo only has one year of experience at the tackle position and he really needs to improve his overall technique. He would benefit from bulking up and increasing his strength and he does have the frame in which to do so. Durability is a big question mark for Toledo after missing the entire 2001 season with a broken foot and the majority of his sophomore season with a back injury. Joe Toledo is a versatile player who could play guard or tackle in the NFL. He is extremely raw and will take time to develop but he has tremendous upside which will get him selected on the second day of the 2006 NFL draft.
