Analysis

Joel Dreessen has been a starter for Colorado State since his sophomore season. He is a high character guy who has been a team leader both on and off the field. He has a good combination of size and speed for the position. As a receiver he gets off the line well, runs precise routes, and does a good job of finding soft spots in zone coverage. He has great hands and rarely drops a catchable ball. He lacks great speed, but he can still stretch the defense and make a big play down the field. As a junior against Cal he had an 85 yard catch and run for a touchdown in school history. He has proven to be a very durable player in his career. He did miss a month of action in 2003 due to an abdominal strain, but he had thirty consecutive starts prior to the injury. He lacks ideal strength for a tight end. He needs to increase his strength and improve his blocking technique to become a more complete tight end. At the moment he is a one deminsional pass catching tight end. He primarily played the H-back position in Colorado State's double tight end offense and that could be the position he plays in the NFL as well. He also served as the long snapper at Colorado State, which could slightly increase his value in the draft because it is always good to be able to do more than one thing when you are trying to make an NFL roster. At the Senior Bowl, he only caught one pass for five yards in the game. But he had an outstanding week at practice which will help him. His best play in practice was a nice 30 yard catch he made down the seam. He was absolutely crushed by safety Jammal Brimmer and he still hung on to the football. Dreessen is a player who has a good chance to really move up the draft charts, butat this point he looks like a solid third or fourth round pick.
