Background

John Beck attended Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona where he played quarterback on the football team and was a pitcher and infielder on the baseball team. He started at quarterback his junior and senior seasons, leading the team to a state championship as a senior. He was named MVP of the state championship game. In his two years as a starter, Beck led the team to a 25-2 overall record. He was named first team all-region and first team all-state. He was named regional offensive player of the year and state high school player of the year. He was selected to play in the Arizona all-star game and was named MVP at the conclusion of the game. John holds the state record for touchdown passes in a single season with 42—He only threw 4 interceptions that season. John, who speaks Portuguese fluently, went on a two year Mormon mission after high school. When he returned, Beck opted to attend BYU where he saw action in 8 games as a true freshman, starting 4 contests. He finished the season completing 73 of 145 pass attempts for 864 yards and 5 touchdowns with 5 interceptions. He was named academic all-MWC for his performance in the classroom as a freshman. As a sophomore, John started 10 of 11 games, completing 192 of 331 pass attempts for 2,563 yards and 15 touchdowns with 8 interceptions. He set school and conference records for pass attempts in a single game with 67 attempts against UNLV. He was named second team all-MWC at the conclusion of his sophomore season. As a junior, John set career highs in pass attempts (513) and pass completions (331), passing for 3,709 yards and 27 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. He was named team offensive MVP and received first team all-MWC honors, as well as academic all-MWC honors. As a senior, Beck had his best season, completing 289 of 417 pass attempts while setting career highs in passing yards (3,885) and passing touchdowns (32). He threw just 8 interceptions on the year and was named first team all-MWC for the second consecutive season.

Analysis

John Beck has a good deal of experience, having started at quarterback for the better part of the past four seasons at BYU. He is an intelligent player with good decision making ability for a quarterback. He has good field vision, knows how to read a defense, has a quick release, and is an extremely accurate short to intermediate range passer. He will take what the defense gives him and rarely forces passes into coverage. He had an excellent touchdown to interception ratio as a senior (4-1). He stands tall in the pocket and will deliver the football with a defender in his face. He has good mobility and is able to evade the rush, get out of the pocket and make an accurate throw on the run. He also has the ability to make a play with his feet when needed. John Beck lacks ideal size and arm strength for an NFL quarterback. He is also older than your average quarterback due to the two year Mormon mission he went on after high school. Beck will be 26 by the start of his rookie season. John Beck is a player who lacks all of the physical abilities required to become a starting quarterback at the next level; however, he should develop into a very solid backup. He should be a second day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
