Jon Beason attended Chaminade-Madonna prep school in Miramar, Florida where he played football and basketball. Jon played linebacker, strong safety, and fullback in high school. As a senior, Jon rushed for 811 yards and 12 touchdowns as a fullback. On defense he finished with 75 tackles and 5 interceptions. He was considered to be one of the top 10 linebacker prospects in the nation. He was recruited by Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, LSU, and Georgia; however, he opted to attend the University of Miami instead. Jon began his true freshman season as a fullback, starting two games before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. He was awarded a medical redshirt for the 2003 season, giving him an extra year of eligibility. The following year Jon saw action in all 12 games, starting the final 4 contests at strongside linebacker. He finished the season with 29 tackles and a sack. As a sophomore, Jon shifted over to weakside linebacker where he started 10 of 12 games. He finished the season with 64 tackles on the year. Jon had his best season as a junior, totaling 92 tackles and 2 ½ sacks. Jon still has another year of eligibility left; however, he opted to skip his final season to enter the 2007 NFL draft.
Analysis
Jon Beason has experience against top competition, having started at linebacker for the past 2 ½ years for the Hurricanes in the ACC. He is an intelligent player with a good combination of strength and athleticism for the linebacker position. He will take on blockers and does a good job of shedding their blocks. He is a good tackler and an extremely hard hitter. He is an aggressive run defender who makes plays all over the field. He also has the ability to drop back into coverage when needed. Beason is a versatile player who can play all three linebacker positions. At just 6-0, Beason is a bit undersized and he doesn’t have the frame to add additional bulk. He has started at both outside linebacker positions at Miami but he will most likely project as a weakside linebacker at the next level. Jon Beason is a player whose stock has been on the rise as of late. He should be a late first or early second round pick in the 2007 NFL draft. Player News Feed
