Background

Jon Scifres is the brother of current San Diego Charger punter Mike Scifres. Jon attended Destrehan High School in Destrehan, Louisiana. Jon earned all-district honors in both his junior and senior seasons. He helped Destrehan to a perfect 10-0 record as a senior, averaging 42 yards per punt on his way to being named all-metro special teams player of the year. Jon went on to play at Southwest Missouri State where he handled the team’s kickoff duties most of his freshman season. He also connected on 3 of 6 field goal attempts, earning “freshman of the year” honors for the team. As a sophomore, Scifres became the teams’ full-time starting place kicker. He was successful on 28 of 30 extra point attempts and 11 of 20 field goal attempts on the year. His junior year was a breakout year for Scifres, as he was one of the most accurate kickers in the nation. He had a near perfect season, connecting on 34 of 35 extra point attempts and all 15 field goal attempts, an NCAA record for most field goals made without a miss. He was named first team all-gateway and first team all-American for his performance. He also was named honorable mention all-gateway for his play as the teams punter, averaging 39.2 yards per attempt on 57 kicks. Jon had another good season as a senior, connecting on 31 of 33 extra point attempts and 10 of 14 field goal attempts.

Analysis

Jon Scifres is a versatile player with a good deal of experience, having started the past three seasons at Southwest Missouri. Although it wasn’t tested much in college, Jon has a strong leg. He never attempted a field goal of 50 yards or more in college, with a career long of 49 yards. He has been an extremely accurate kicker over the past two seasons (95.5% XP, 86.2% FG). As a junior his only miss was a single extra point attempt. He improved his long range accuracy (40+ yards) from 37% his first two seasons to 75% his last two seasons. His ability to punt and handle kickoff duties will only add to his value. Jon has a chance to be a late round pick or sign as an undrafted free agent.
